The ancient Greeks associated the oppressive heat of the “Dog Days of Summer” with bad luck and disease . Modern transportation now allows many of us a chance to escape the travel heat. Some travelers head up to the cooling mountains others down to the beach for the refreshing saltwater swim. No matter where the hot temperature takes you, when you find yourself in the piedmont know that there is a lot to do. In particular, consider putting Garner, NC and surrounding Wake County on your adventure list. I’ve provided a few ideas below but know this is only a sample.
Wake County, which houses the North Carolina Capital City of Raleigh and the town of Garner has become the expert on beating the heat. There are many experiences that give you a chance to enjoy yourself outside or if you prefer, inside. The county is surrounded by bike trails that flow in and out of wooded trails gliding past rivers and providing space to feel the breeze in your hair. Check out Bike Maps to find a plethora of great biking locations. Want to get a little closer to the water? Experiences with Neuse Adventures and Fantasy Lake Adventure Park give you the options of selecting from a more restful kayak or canoe trip to energetic water activities providing something for everyone. If you would rather have more control over your outdoor adventure and prefer hiking or birdwatching then Wake County’s trail map is for you. On this map you can find parks and trails for all skill levels that help you enjoy the outdoors. As always I highly recommend our NC State Farmer’s Market no matter what season you travel. Make a stop here pick up some treats and take a short drive over to Dix Park to relax in a hammock under the pines.
Need some evening entertainment? Check out the free concert series in downtown Garner and all of the other activities happening downtown. And remember Garner is very close to Red Hat Amphitheater and Coastal Credit Union Music Park who both have great artists performing summer and into the fall.
If your preference is for something indoors with air conditioning then the NC Science Center right in Downtown Raleigh is an enriching experience for anyone wanting to understand the state’s natural environment from animals to plants, rocks and more. In Garner the Garner Performing Arts Center, and Lorraines have lots of indoor evening entertainment options. Know that this is just a short list of some of the things you can do in Garner and surrounding Wake County. But for summer time travel you should consider the Capital City area for your next North Carolina exploration.
