The town of Garner was still called St. Mary’s district when the railroad arrived in 1851 and even when the first post office opened in 1878. In 1883, the town was incorporated as Garner’s Station but actually lost their incorporation in 1901. Four years later, in 1905, the town was reincorporated as the Town of Garner, which it remains called today.
The town of Garner, NC has a rich history much like many small towns across the world.  Of course, the best thing about a small town is the pride that people have when they talk about it.  You can always hear it in their voice as they start sentences with things like, “When my grandparents first got here….” or “I remember when….”  It’s fun to hear the stories about why people are here and why they stay.  There are many people willing to talk about the town and a good place to start is the local history museum. So when you are ready to dig a little deeper it is time for you to visit the Garner History Museum at the Depot.  I can almost see it from my home office if it weren’t for this big Magnolia tree at the corner. It is just a short walk from the Banks Bed
Hours are limited but regular because, like many small museums, the budget doesn’t allow for a full time staff person, therefore it relies on volunteers. Seeking history, learning about Garner, or just reminiscing, the Garner History Museum at the Depot provides it all. Visit the website and/or visit the museum, it will be worth your time and leisure.
