A Look into the Past – The Garner History Museum at the Depot

The town of Garner was still called St. Mary’s district when the railroad arrived in 1851 and even when the first post office opened in 1878. In 1883, the town was incorporated as Garner’s Station but actually lost their incorporation in 1901.  Four years later, in 1905, the town was reincorporated as the Town of Garner, which it remains called today. 

The town of Garner, NC has a rich history much like many small towns across the world.  Of course, the best thing about a small town is the pride that people have when they talk about it.  You can always hear it in their voice as they start sentences with things like, “When my grandparents first got here….” or “I remember when….”  It’s fun to hear the stories about why people are here and why they stay.  There are many people willing to talk about the town and a good place to start is the local history museum. So when you are ready to dig a little deeper it is time for you to visit the Garner History Museum at the Depot.  I can almost see it from my home office if it weren’t for this big Magnolia tree at the corner. It is just a short walk from the Banks Bed and Breakfast.  You can also easily take a nice walk down Main Street until you reach Pearl Street where they are located. A big red caboose marks your turning spot. Make sure and take a good look at the building itself as it is the original (moved) depot building that once was the place where tickets were purchased, people arrived, and others left for their train ride to adventure. Touring the museum gives you a chance to really understand some of the people and places that made this railroad town what it is today.  A good collection of local artifacts gathered from donations by community members allows you to piece together what it took to build and grow a small town. While you’re there go ahead and have lunch at picnic tables available for your use.  

Hours are limited but regular because, like many small museums, the budget doesn’t allow for a full time staff person, therefore it relies on volunteers. Seeking history, learning about Garner, or just reminiscing, the Garner History Museum at the Depot provides it all. Visit the website and/or visit the museum, it will be worth your time and leisure.
