Trains are so much a part of small towns across America. Even if the train doesn’t stop in town any longer when it rolls through, it gives you a feeling of nostalgia. You can just imagine the days when it would stop to pick you up for a trip to Washington, D.C. or New York for that big city adventure. A train almost always causes me to pause and look out the window of this big house and daydream about where the Amtrak riders are headed. Sometimes I try to imagine what might be in that box car. One of my favorite train times is when I’m strolling down Main Street. The power of the engine and the blowing of the horn requires you to stop your conversation and notice the trains passing. I bet some people look out the train window and wonder what this little town of Garner is like. I hope some of them even come back to explore the town at a later date. If they do, they will discover some wonderful options to delight their senses. A stroll through Main Street offers a chance to enjoy coffee and sandwiches at Full Bloom, fresh pastries from Nana’s Lil Sweets, local mixed drinks at Aristotle Distillery or your choice of wine from Zin Yoga Studio and Wine Lounge. Plants are plentiful at Pedal to Petal where you can also get your bike repaired. You can get married right off Main at The Distillery, after you’ve gotten your hair done at Locs, Naturals, and More or down at Monique’s. Historic Garner has several street festivals and often the Rollin’ Stove food truck is parked on Main Street even when there’s not a festival. And, as always the Garner History Museum at the Depot is just down the street from all of the local shops and businesses. Slowing down a bit to enjoy what a small town has to offer gives you a chance to ponder history, support the local economy, and think about what the future might bring. So whether it’s the zooming Amtrak or a lumbering freight train loaded with supplies, trains are just one of the wonderful things about strolling down Main Street in Garner.
