Modern transportation now allows many of us a chance to escape the travel heat. Some travelers head up to the cooling mountains others down to the beach for the refreshing saltwater swim. No matter where the hot temperature takes you, when you find yourself in the piedmont know that there is a lot to do. In particular, consider putting Garner, NC and surrounding Wake County on your adventure list. I’ve provided a few ideas below but know this is only a sample. ![Brown wooden glider on porch of white house. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Augblogporresized-225x300.jpg)Wake County, which houses the North Carolina Capital City of [Raleigh](https://www.visitraleigh.com) and the town of [Garner](https://www.garnernc.gov/) has become the expert on beating the heat. A red velveteen couch with a small table are on the right of the image. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/AIbloglibraryresized-288x300.jpg)The library, a lovely place to relax. Oh, the joys, trials and inevitable problems with AI. I, like many people, really appreciate that today I can search something really quickly. AI will pop me out some ideas when my brain is too tired to think, like menu ideas for a 4th of July tea or what are good substitutes for a missing ingredient that I thought I had. Like all tools, AI has its purpose but the problem is AI does not really know it all and is taking general information and making statements out of context at times. In today’s bed and breakfast industry where each residence is so uniquely different, I believe their rash generalizations do harm to the unique settings provided by these small stay businesses. ![Treats such as cookies and bananas along with tea set out on a wooden server.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/AIblogsnacksresized-300x225.jpg)Afternoon snacks for all to enjoy at their leisure. I recently read some information provided by AI that listed all the reasons you should avoid a bed and breakfast. Statements such as “forced socializing and inflexible curfews”, “lack of menu options”, “lack of parking” and “Quirks of older homes” were just a few of the reasons listed as to why one should go elsewhere. Trying to go beyond the “Garbage In-Garbage Out” that AI often provides, I think some points need to be made about what is really going on with our industry today. So many of today’s Bed and Breakfast amenities are topnotch and I have to challenge these AI conclusions with some additional feedback and information. ![A brown chair and table outside on the patio. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/AIblogsideporchresized-225x300.jpg)A patio nook where one can enjoy coffee in peace. Let me address a few of these assumptions. The first one mentioned “forced socializing and inflexible curfews”. There are many different sized bed and breakfast options across the country. I’ve met various innkeepers from across many states and communicate almost monthly with several. So far, I’ve not met an owner who forces their guests to socialize. I actually cannot even envision how one would do that. Do we tie our guests to the dining chairs and demand them to talk to each other and BE NICE? Does AI think we knock on doors and demand visitors to get out of their rooms and sit in the living room? I doubt this ever happens. At breakfast many of us have multiple set ups for our tables and chairs providing guests with group seating or separate seating. If a guest is not comfortable dining with others, they should inform us and most innkeepers can arrange more private places for seating. We also work with guests on breakfast times. Yes, in general our guests enjoy eating with others and are happy to have breakfast at a designated time because they want the meal to be as fresh as possible and they actually like other humans. But, most of us know that the reality is some guests want and need more socializing and other guests are more private. As an introvert myself, I enjoy sitting at a table where conversations are going on around me and I can decide when to join in or not. Plus, I appreciate the diversity of people and their opinions even if they do not hold the same ones as me. Remember, just like at your own home you can leave the living room and go to your room anytime you like. In addition, all of our guests get door codes to come and go as they please. There is no curfew and personally I don’t know of any bed and breakfasts that have restrictions on the comings and goings of their guests. With that said most innkeepers want a reasonable check-in time so that they can help guests understand and feel comfortable in the space they will inhabit for their stay but if it must be late most hosts offer a late check-in option too. ![Breakfast foods of eggs, bacon, potatoes, and strawberries on a plate. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Breakfast-resized-1-278x300.jpg)One of the many breakfast options. Lack of menu options is another fallacy. Seriously, breakfast challenge accepted because it could get boring if I only fix scrambled eggs. I, like many other innkeepers, am very concerned about making sure visitors are having palatable experiences. Our menu changes daily and is a good way for guests to explore variety in breakfast options. Bed and Breakfast owners often get together to share successful menu items, discuss ways to make breakfast more satisfying and help support each other through cooking challenges. With that said, many contact guests beforehand and clearly check on allergies, likes and dislikes. If there is a strict allergy condition that is impossible to keep out of the meal I let guests know. Yes, I can prepare gluten free menu items (and the blueberry muffins are fabulous) BUT I can’t say it’s prepared in a gluten free kitchen, at which point guest must decide if my place is safe for them to stay for breakfast. As a person that cannot successfully digest dairy I appreciate the lengths cooks go to to help keep me safe and comfortable and I want my guests to feel the same way. Most of the bed and breakfast owners I know like to explore and experiment with a variety of food options but most importantly innkeepers want to make sure guests are satisfied, full, and able to enjoy a meal safely. But, if someone likes hard boiled eggs out of a tube and to make their own waffle then maybe a bed and breakfast is not for you. Also, check to make sure your Inn of choice really does make you a fresh breakfast because some do not. Typically though breakfast tends to be our specialty. And don’t even get me started on the fresh baked cookies, teas, and other treats that greet your arrival or enhance your evenings as these things too are unique to the inn where you are staying. ![A gravel parking lot surrounded by plantings. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/AIblogparkingresized-225x300.jpg)Ample parking surrounded by plantings, sculpture, and seating awaits our guests. I was surprised when “lack of parking” was a listed concern. Yes, there are some bed and breakfasts in neighborhoods where you are parking on the street but often it’s much closer to your room than the parking lots at a motel. Many of us have parking lots that more than handle the guests on hand. Most of us have parking lots surrounded by gardens full of seasonal blooms and trees. Nature makes for a more welcoming homecoming because for us you are coming into a home. Park you car and get ready to relax and feel like you are home….where somebody else does the cooking and laundry. Finally, we are at the “quirks” of an old home. This one can have some merit….at times. First you need to know that many small inns and bed and breakfast establishments were built new and designed without the quirks. Also, for many of us the old historic home has been completely or partially renovated. ![A wooden headboard behind the white linens and blue round pillow. A small lamp sits on a white dresser in the corner. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/AIblogMirandaresized-225x300.jpg)One of the four en-suite rooms where you can rest. Therefore we were able to add sound proof batting into the walls between rooms which is something most modern homes and motels do not even have. Our plumbing was completely updated which makes for great hot water and water pressure. We have all of the safety features such a smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, gentle motion sensor lights that guide you in your room at night but don’t wake you up, and sound machines to comfort your sleep. So our quirks, well they contain the history and consist of a variety of mismatched doors and doorknobs, some uneven floors, interesting nooks and crannies, and dents in places from a former family home well lived in. The homes history also has a story, in fact many stories and it’s making new stories everyday. If your’re interested in our history take a look back at past blogs such as [“A Brief History of the Banks House”](https://banksbnb.com/blog/2023/12/a-brief-history-of-the-banks-house-in-garner-nc), [“Every Dent has a Story”](https://banksbnb.com/blog/2023/11/every-dent-has-a-story-renovating-old-homes) , and[ “A History of Work from Home”](https://banksbnb.com/blog/2025/05/a-history-of-work-from-home) . For me, being in a historic home with all of its quirks is what makes us special. You are not going to get lost in the hallway because everything and every room looks alike. ![Purple and white petunias in the forefront of a white house.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/AIblogpetuniasresized-225x300.jpg)A place to enjoy flowers and easy access to the house. But, ultimately the experience that makes staying in a bed and breakfast the most special is knowing you have an innkeeper that wants you to have a good stay and truly cares about people. So, to AI I say “You’re not human so you don’t understand how much you are missing by not making a bed and breakfast part of your travel experience.” My suggestion is ignore the negatives AI promotes and make your own decision and at least once in your lifetime give yourself an opportunity to experience a very unique and personal stay. We look forward to hosting you. Mary **Categories:** Bed & Breakfast, Food & Drink, Uncategorized --- ### [Ready for a Road Trip? Not that we all like the same music. I’m just saying we all experience music almost every day, whether you hear it on purpose or just feel the beat from a passing car. You may be listening to songs on the radio in your car, over headphones in front of your work computer, or just the rhythm that is rolling around in your own head. Music is often the connection holding visual memories in place. You see something and it reminds you of a melody you’ve enjoyed. Songs are a connection to your past and your present. That is why people enjoy concerts, musical performances and watching someone take an instrument and make it create beautiful sounds. ![Brochure with 2026 events for Garner, NC.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Blog37eventinfo-225x300.jpg)Garner, NC is a town surrounded by music. But as one of the towns that snuggles up to Raleigh, Garner also offers its own share of festivals, concerts and a quaint Main Street. As a Main Street America Affiliate and a NC Main Street community, there are businesses on Main Street owned and operated by local community members who are excited to serve you and the neighbors that surround them. Banks Bed and Breakfast offers a historical stay located right across the from Main St. for a place to rest after a day of exploring. ![A man and woman in bike helmets on a paved path surrounded by trees](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/blog-gallery3-route-to-innkeeping-263x300.jpg)But Garner also offers lots of places to enjoy the outdoors. Our town has many parks that offer playgrounds, ball fields and trails ranging from easy walking to more vigorous adventures. There are so many parks and trails tucked in and around the town that each one offers its own unique experience. If you are looking for some variety in your outdoor trails and play spaces here are a few to consider. Some of Garner’s playgrounds are close to Main Street. Two existing spaces and one coming soon, are within walking distance of downtown. An accessible playground right below the Garner Recreation Center located on Main Street is a compact space full of fun. The surface is flat and the equipment allows for all levels of play. This playground is also conveniently located next to a sidewalk loop and playing field. More important it is the closest to Main Street’s coffee shops, tea shops, and a bakery for when you’re ready for a treat. Another playground is located across the street on Garner Road right next to the Senior Center. It offers fun play equipment, a covered picnic shelter and a peaceful Gazebo which is also a great train watching setting. A larger recreation complex called Yeargan Park is opening soon. It is located about a half mile from downtown, across the road and railroad tracks and down the road past the historic Yeargan home. This play space will offer an inclusive playground, covered pavilion, restrooms, ball fields and places to walk and rest. Presently, Yeargan Park is a construction zone, but progress is being made and it is going to be a must see. There are also many smaller playgrounds in neighborhoods tucked all around the town to provide plenty of variety. ![Black trellis at entrance to trail at Banks house property. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_1317-225x300.jpg)Ready for some trail adventures? You can access a winding trail system by hopping on Garner Road and turning down the drive between the Senior Center and Dog Park. Once the road ends you will find parking and a trail head that leads you over wooded small streams and well worn woodland trails. Pay attention as this hike winds around and has many offshoots that can easily distract you from the main trail. Ready to drive for a longer hike? Clemmons Educational State Forest is located a short seven mile drive from downtown. It is home to a pond, picnic area, talking tree trail and a geology trail. You can plan for hikes from a half a mile to 3 miles or combine them to add on to your distance. This forest area is worth the trip and sure to help get your heart rate up if that is what you desire. Or you might choose to stroll with your blanket in hand and find a place to settle by the pond for a quiet and relaxing respite. If you’re looking for a more paved walking experience look no further than either White Deer Park or Lake Benson. Both of these parks provide playgrounds, restrooms, fields and paved walking paths. You can access these parks by driving a quick 2+miles from Downtown Garner. If your dog needs a playground, Lake Benson has you covered as well as another one beside the Senior Center. ![Wood birdhouse attached to tree in the woods. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_1318-225x300.jpg)This is a very short list of places where you can enjoy Garner’s outdoor recreational spaces. When you decide to stay in town longer to explore more trails consider staying at Banks Bed and Breakfast [www.banksbnb.com](http://www.banksbnb.com) as this renovated 1897 home is sure to provide you a comfortable place to recuperate. Every small town has its own personality. Every small town also has its own quirky way of setting things up. The most exciting thing about a small town is that no two are ever going to be the same. So if an original experience is what you want, jump in your car and head to a small town where unique communities make the difference and your visit makes a difference to the community. ![Brochure with 2026 events for Garner, NC.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Blog37eventinfo-225x300.jpg)Let’s take Garner, North Carolina as an example of what visiting a small town can look like. Many Main Street businesses are close to railroads as that was an important part of how people connected. Garner built up along a railroad but only on one side of the track. You will actually be able to park right at the track to get to the business of your choice. Garner hosts a smaller downtown but it is a mighty one. You can stroll along and look in business windows and grab a coffee, tea, or beer. Lunch sandwiches and baked goods are available too. There are also hidden treasures tucked in behind the scenes. Look closely and you’ll find a spot to do yoga and sip wine, buy a plant, order a sign and a sizeable venue to either get married in or hold a large family celebration. Food trucks randomly show up along Main Street and in back parking lots. Garner also hosts free concerts in May, June, August and September and two food truck events. And of course there is art everywhere. ![A sidewalk with trees and street lights and a full moon in the sky.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Blog37walkable-225x300.jpg)The town is very walk-able and you can easily go down Main Street and into the neighborhoods. Walk west and you will make your way to the Garner History Museum. Walk east and you will find the Polar Ice House where lots of ice hockey gets practiced. Look across the street north and you’ll notice a large historical white house called Banks Bed and Breakfast where weekend guests can get a small town stay and community members can use the parlor for events. The street that parallels Main Street is unique in that it was North Carolina’s first paved highway! ![White house in background of train coupler.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Blog37RRresize-225x300.jpg) Garner also conveniently borders Raleigh, the capital city of North Carolina. This means you have easy access to big city experiences too. So the next time you are looking for something a little different, more laid back and unique to itself, head over to a small town where your travel dollars make the most impact on local communities. Some people may wrap up their year literally wrapping presents. I have lots of ideas floating around in my head on ways to make Banks Bed and Breakfast even better than the year before. I always like to take a look back at how the past year went so changes for improving our outreach can happen in a realistic way. ![Cream colored mug filled with green plant on wooden table. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/9442EF5E-2AFA-49BC-896F-6C9AF200C57D-226x300.jpg)Every year we get to host a wide range of new and returning guests and this year was no different. Guests came from as far away as Colorado and as close as Garner. Lots of North Carolina people come from areas around the coast, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Virginia to enjoy museums, concerts and small town charm that leads them to a stay with us. We appreciate everyone who stays with our small business because small business dollars bring more into our local economy to help improve the lives of our community. We know that our guests understand the importance of community and how their dollars can go further to impact more individuals. ![Black metal stairway beside a red caboose. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0543-225x300.jpg)We had some events to enhance our visitor outreach and provide a way for locals to get a chance to experience the beauty of this old house. Once again we hosted the Red Hot Caboose Tea to help raise money for the Garner Museums caboose restoration project. This year the work began on the caboose with steps being added for easier access and lots of de-rusting, scraping, metal repair and painting. We also organized four other teas one of which was a tea with a Mark Twain actor, Don McNeill, who delighted the group with stories from the Mark Twain repertoire. Two other teas allowed us to work together with other small business owners. Melonie Hand from the tea shop across the street Steep Right Up [steeprightup.com](http://www.steeprightup.com) taught the fine art of tea drinking and explained the mixology of tea involved with different tea blends. The second tea was a Halloween themed tea where Shalon Maxile, from Bundts by Brenee [bundtsbybrenee.com](http://www.bundtsbybrenee.com) guided participants in decorating their own mini-bundt with a creepy crawly topping. Remember, both of these small businesses during the holiday season for your parties and gift list. Our final tea of the year was our Holiday Tea that included a fun snowman ornament craft using actual wood lath from the Banks house restoration work and a winter wonderland themed tea in the parlor. ![Colorful Destination Business logo.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Decblogdestilogo300.png)This year the North Carolina Main Street and Rural Planning Center recognized our work on becoming a Certified NC Destination Business. The certification is part of a statewide effort to assist businesses in attracting new customers to help strengthen their local economy. You can find more information about the town where Banks Bed and Breakfast [banksbnb.com](http://banksbnb.com) is located by looking at the North Central area on [maintomaintrail.com](http://maintomaintrail.com) We are proud to have achieved this designation and our unique position stating “Banks Bed and Breakfast is the only 1897 stay located on North Carolina’s first paved highway” Yes, the Banks house has been around a long time. Speaking of history we received an Anthemion Award from Capital Area Preservation. This award was presented “In recognition of outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in historic preservation in Wake County, North Carolina.” It recognized us and our partners in the restoration for “commercial rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the Banks house.” Lights, camera, action! In the fall our library was the setting for part of a ten part docuseries being produced by Enderley Productions [enderley.pictures](http://www.enderley.pictures.com) . In their search for an appealing interior our library was selected for a local detective expert witness interview. For those of you who have visited us you know the library is a favorite room among guests. Be on the lookout for “Staged” coming out in the future. We also had our first news interview. The local ABC station came out to discuss what being a Certified NC Destination Business meant and how the economy was treating us. ![Sandwiches in the foreground on a pink tablecloth with teacups, glasses and a teapot with pink flowers and silver sticks. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Decblogteatablerez300-225x300.jpg)In our desire to continually make improvements we received a grant from the Downtown Garner Association to continue the brick sidewalk from the parking lot to the side towards the parlor. This allows us to more easily help the caterers access the parlor and allow guests to go from the parlor to the parking lot without going through the grass. We also received grants from Capital Area Workforce Development to spend on marketing ads and logo swag to give out at tabling events. These grants for small business entrepreneurs help us get our name out in the community. We want everyone to think of Banks Bed and Breakfast for their overnight stays, stays for out of town guests and small event space. Speaking of the small event space this year our parlor was the site of bridal luncheons, baby showers, business meetings, celebrations and even a church service. Our community has really helped in getting the word out about our space and services. ![Sign shaped like a purple present with a green ribbon. Banks Bed and Breakfast written in black. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Decblogpresent300-225x300.jpg)Our main focus continues to be our bed and breakfast business which we consider the star of the Banks house. We are always looking for ways to add that special touch to make sure guests are feeling cared for, comfortable and well fed. Long ago when we started the restoration work on this property we had a dream to preserve the house for future generations, make it a comfortable place for people to visit and stay and to provide a space for community member events. Still today the best part of being in this home is when we hear the laughter that comes when the house is full. We believe a home can bring people together for shared experiences. A home is meant to be lived in and shared with friends, family and the community. Banks Bed and Breakfast is certainly at its best when others fill the rooms with love and joy. We look forward to being able to serve you in the future, gathering for more days of laughter, fellowship and community within our walls. Thank you for a meaningful year and here is hope for a great and joyous 2026! Days can be too cold or too hot and cause you to delay going on a trip. Well, now it is really fall and that makes for the a grand time to travel. I admit it’s a little of a packing quandary, do you bring shorts and t-shirts or do you need a sweater? The answer is you need both. That sweater will allow you to go out on a crisp mornings that make you feel so alive. The chilly temperatures seems to make you breathe better like the air has been cleaned by nature and your body just wants to take it all in. Later in the day that sweater may need to come off as the sunshine warms your shoulders and soothes you with it’s huggable energy. Fall allows you to explore in natures autumn colors. The days are varied. You can work up a sweat hiking trails and then want to curl up by an evening fire. There seems to be a voice calling you to pumpkin patches, farmers markets, and corn mazes. So, go out and explore. Take that trip. Visit a main street location for the perfect experience. Main streets are filled with local businesses ready for you to come in from the chill. Main street businesses put your money back into the local community where they can continue to provide great fall escapes. Remember winter days of biting winds, slush, snow and ice are just around the corner. This is when my heat induced daydreams fill with leaves falling from the trees and crunching underfoot as a cool breeze brings me comfort. I think it’s the color of those leaves that soon send me down the path of what shall my skeletons be doing in the front yard this year? ![Skeleton waving hand with black rose in mouth and wearing a black scarf. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Skel3resiz500-225x300.jpg)It’s just three little skeletons that basically represent my three, now grown children. The humidity decreases, the temperature drops and people seem to emerge out of their homes and offices a little bit more. If feels good to be able to go outside and get the sense of a cool breeze flowing over your skin. Fall brings a certain energy that also allows you to slow down and take time in just being outside What if you could fall in love with a more casual, exploratory experience? Fall is also a perfect time to explore those small towns that are scattered throughout the state. Each community offers something just a little different from the other. Most importantly if offers you a chance to support those one of a kind, small businesses that help keep our small towns unique. ![Woman and man sitting on cloth and hugging. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Productspotlighting3-291x300.jpg)Garner, NC is one of those small towns that offers you the chance to experience us and even explore some of the small towns close to us. The best way to start is to book your one of a kind stay at the local bed and breakfast. Personally I would suggest Banks Bed and Breakfast which is conveniently located right across the railroad tracks from Main Street. Starting your morning off with our hearty breakfast will help give you the energy to explore. There are trails close by for hiking, tennis courts right down the street, and major shopping opportunities less than a two mile drive away. But, the casual experience is right across the street. Take your time to explore Main Street and visit a bakery, tea shop, coffee shop, wine store, plant store and in the evening the local bar. Spend time talking with the shop owners and learn their stories to understand what makes the town unique. If you’re here on the weekend the community museum is open on Saturday afternoons which grants you the opportunity to really understand the town’s founding and how it came to be. Falling in love with a small town is a special kind of experience. Think about what made people start their lives here so many years ago. Falling in love with a bed and breakfast that just happens to be in that small town can provide you with that first encounter with how the community began. Staying in a home that has been en-grained in the community since it’s inception takes you back to a time that allows you to slow down and experience a respite much needed. **October 22 through November 22, 2025 we are running a special of 20% off the second night of your stay.** Book this directly on-line. What does that mean for our visitors? It hearkens back to a time when travelers explored this part of the state on a new road, built for cars that stretched across the state and was known as the Central Highway and later Hwy 70. The original paved section between Raleigh and Garner was paved in or around 1917 or 1918 and is considered the first paved road in the state. It helped make Raleigh and Garner well connected to the rest of the state. That history of welcoming travelers continues as we are uniquely positioned to be able to offer you a one of a kind experience. ![King bed with teal background. So, for over 120 years this home sheltered the same family sleeping, playing, working, cooking, and rearranging furniture. Every dent has a story and every story holds a different memory. This was a home that was built, added onto, and had windows and walls moved as the family grew and changed. You can go to the library and engage with books that date back as far as the antebellum time period. Family Bibles still sit on the shelves and some books show the evidence of young boys who shot BB guns in the house. ![Red strawberries in a bowl on a plate with waffles, link sausage and eggs. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Uniqueblogresized7-282x300.jpg)Sitting on the back porch you can imagine what those woods might have looked like as the farm fields they once were. On the front porch you’ll see Main Street and many of it’s original buildings now repurposed for today. You also have a good chance of seeing trains go by on the track that divides us from Main Street. Once a small town located next to the capital city of Raleigh it has now merged into a seamless part of Wake County. What was once a longer trip into Raleigh is now about a ten minute drive to museums, shopping, and restaurants. But, head in the other direction and you will find museums, shopping and restaurants right in Garner too. ![Green couch on wooden floor with glass doors in background. A house can get built, but a home stands the test of time for as long as someone loves it and understands its importance to the community. So, if you like being part of a unique stay that blends history and modernity then Banks Bed and Breakfast is the stay for you. Everyone needs a good energy providing meal to sustain their bodies whether you are shopping, site-seeing, or just casually strolling down Main Street. But all of us understand that turning on the stove at home can be the least favorite part of summer. It is also understood that motels who often deal with large quantities of guests coming in and out are for the most part only able to provide pre-packaged foods or make-your-own waffles. There is a time and a place for a quick grab and go breakfast but you deserve better than that. You deserve a breakfast where the chef puts in love, care, and consideration for the customer. A full service bed and breakfast wants you to not only have a restful overnight stay in an uniquely designed home but we want your breakfast to be memorable too. ![Creme colored banks bed and breakfast mug.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/blogmugresized500-297x300.jpg)When you enter the dining room you know that you are starting your meal in a special place where care was taken to set the table. There is no other dining room in the world that is like ours because every bed and breakfast is an individual home. Each menu is developed with our guests in mind. Today your coffee mug was designed, hand made, and glazed specifically for our bed and breakfast. Every ingredient is carefully thought out and sourced to make the freshest food possible. Even how the food is plated becomes an important part of the breakfast experience. Our goal is to keep you out of the kitchen and give you a wow experience at the table. The Certified Destination Business initiative was a continuation in part from the Main-to-Main Trail virtual tourism platform which received partial funding from the federal Economic Development Administration grant as part of Covid-19 recovery. Joining together, the NCMSRPC and The Schallert Group worked with select business owners to instruct them in how to market their uniqueness as a destination business. ![Black and white house image with black wording overlay.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Blog-desresiz500-300x225.jpg) This statewide Main Street process trains businesses to visualize, conceptualize and work on ways to attract new customers that help bolster local economies. Recent shifts to working from home may seem new and were a reaction to our isolation during Covid. Something that is interesting is when you enter Banks Bed and Breakfast you are becoming part of its work from home history. The Historic Banks house started out as a family home and business. Dr. Braxton Banks purchased the home around 1897 from Dr. George Montague, a local pharmacist. Originally, a one story house, Dr. Banks added the second level to make sleeping quarters for the family and used part of the downstairs for his medical practice. When you are waiting for breakfast to be served in the dining room you are actually in the original patient waiting room. The examination room now serves as our office. ![Brown law books on a shelf.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_8764-225x300.jpg)Unfortunately Dr. Banks died in 1903, so his time practicing in the home was cut short. He did however have four children with his wife, Mrs. Nannie Banks and after growing up, one child later used the home for his work. That son, Thomas “Tom” Banks (born 1900) was a graduate of Harvard Law School and went on to use his degree to serve the Wake County area in several ways. One way was his service to Governor Broughton as his personal secretary. Mr. Banks also served Wake County as the lead attorney during a dynamic period of time that included the development of the Raleigh Regional Airport and Research Triangle Park. He also used to run his own practice out of the library where his oldest daughter said, “If the doors were shut you knew daddy had a client and were NOT to disturb him.” ![A man, woman and house image](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_8767-300x135.jpg)Nannie Banks was a strong widow and used the home to bring in income through the renting of various rooms. In fact one of the renters who worked across the tracks on Main Street went on to marry one of her sons. Nannie Banks also was very active in the purchasing and selling of land and likely had a home office somewhere in the house. A prolific reader, Nannie Banks managed the household until 1960 and also helped support the first public library in Garner. ![White house with Banks Bed and Breakfast sign in front of it.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/House-with-signbannersized-1-300x225.jpg)We continue the tradition of work from home by turning the historic Banks house into a full service bed and breakfast. Guest rooms upstairs housed many of the Banks children through the years, but the addition of en-suite bathrooms has definitely increased the comfort level for those staying overnight. The library remains and contains many of the original family books that have been passed down through the years but the doors no longer get shut so it’s always available for exploration. When you stand on the front porches or look out the library window you can still see many of the original buildings that make up Main St. There are lots of changes happening around us, many of which feel new to each generation. But some things remain the same. Carving out a space in our homes for our work, looking for meaningful work that balances our home life with our careers, has been a long time challenge, even pre-Covid. Today the Banks House general layout remains basically the same, and while the owners still work from the home, even though the work is different – as fortunately for our guests, medical examinations no longer happen in our office! **Categories:** B&B News, General, Historical Sites, Main Street, work **Tags:** history, life, work --- ### [Respite at a Bed and Breakfast](https://banksbnb.com/blog/2025/04/respite-at-a-bed-and-breakfast) **Published:** April 2, 2025 **Author:** Client Admin **Content:** As a Bed and Breakfast (B&B) owner, a slightly frustrating thing to hear is, “Isn’t a Bed and Breakfast just like an Airbnb?” While it may seem like a simple comparison, the difference is much bigger than you might think. With an Airbnb, you’re literally paying for air. At a Bed and Breakfast, we provide something much more valuable—a breathing space. ![Peach flowers in vase in front of pink velvet chair with wood trim.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_8421-225x300.jpg)When you book Air, you’re often faced with a long list of expectations. You may have to clean the space, make and strip the bed, or even start the laundry before you leave—despite the cleaning fees you’ve already paid. And let’s not forget about breakfast. Breakfast is completely your responsibility. On the other hand, at a Bed and Breakfast, we take care of everything so you can focus on what really matters: relaxing. No dishes to clean, no beds to make—just a delicious breakfast ready for you each morning. Think about your vacation. Do you want to spend it worrying about whether you’ll feel safe in the neighborhood or if you’ll have someone to help if you need it? What happens if something goes wrong, and you don’t know who to turn to? ![Blueberry muffins.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_8416-225x300.jpg)Unlike Air hosts who might not be available, a Bed and Breakfast is a licensed business, fully inspected by health and fire officials to ensure your safety. Innkeepers are there for more than just a place to stay; they’re your local guides, your connection to great recommendations, and your support system if you need anything during your stay. Whether it’s finding the best restaurant in town, discovering hidden hiking trails, or just chatting over a cup of coffee, Bed and Breakfasts offer an intimate experience that’s difficult to replicate. ![Eggs, link sausage, potatoes, and fruit on a plate.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Romatic-blogfoodresized-300x271.jpg)If you’re staying at a Bed and Breakfast, you’re not just getting a room—you’re getting an experience. The heart of any Bed and Breakfast is its breakfast. It’s more than just a meal; it’s an opportunity to start your day with something special, featuring homemade touches you won’t find anywhere else. Forget about making your own eggs or grabbing a quick bite—your Bed and Breakfast is ready to treat you to something unique and delicious, made just for you. So, the next time you’re planning a trip, think carefully about the kind of experience you want. If you’re looking for a place that offers security, support, and a real sense of hospitality, a Bed and Breakfast is the perfect choice. It’s not just about where you sleep—it’s about how you feel during your stay. At a Bed and Breakfast, we pride ourselves on providing a safe, enriching, and enjoyable experience, all while making sure you start each day with a truly *bang-up* breakfast. That’s not just a stay. Some bed and breakfasts have a winter season and fill up with skiers, snowshoers and snow lovers while others have a summer season and fill up with beach goers who love to bask in the sun. There is also a whole group who serve people all year long in central locations in small towns. The town bed and breakfast serves a purpose to enhance your experience by getting you out of a typical motel stay and into the Main Street immersion. When it’s in a small town, like Banks Bed and Breakfast, we serve a unique niche that you can only get in this specific location. ![Bed with white bedspread and dark orange pillow. Banks Bed and Breakfast, located in the historic Banks house, is a short walk across the railroad tracks to Garner, NC’s original downtown. When you stroll down Main Street you get to literally walk where the town history started. There is a historic marker that gives you a brief idea of what the town went through to become the actual town. You can have coffee, sandwiches, tea, sweet baked goods and a beverage in buildings that have been here for over 100 years. You can go down side streets and find a distillery and wine shop and a place to get married called “The Distillery” You can enter one of the older homes on Main Street to buy plants and if you’re a cyclist get your bike tuned up. You can also get a haircut in those old time barber chairs while watching people meander down the street instead of at a strip mall. After some years of almost being forgotten, Main Streets are growing and changing and becoming a place to experience small town life. Within walking distance of Banks Bed and Breakfast are walking trails and parks. You can catch a live performance taking place in the old Garner High School that has been fully restored, and yes, you can walk there too. Our quaint town even has a local history museum that lets you indulge in a deep dive of our history or just explore the artifacts from our town. Talking about history, Banks Bed and Breakfast has an over 100 year history with the town. The stories it could tell and the changes it has seen as Main Street grew and developed over the years makes it a source of pride for the community. Banks Bed and Breakfast has a library full of original family books, furniture that has survived the test of time, and a rich family history of serving the Garner community. So, for your next stay – whether it’s winter, spring, summer or fall – plan to have it in a town that is unique and experience a small town like no other. I’m not talking about the original celebration but the message it sends out to us today. When I ponder Thanksgiving it says, “Pause and sit down with the ones you love to enjoy a meal” It doesn’t matter what your meal is but it does matter who is at the table with you. Surrounding yourself with the people you care about, who also care about you, is always enriching for your soul. This day is meant to be a meaningful pause where you think about how your year has gone and how those you love were a part of it. If you can, take time to really look around the table and bring to mind a memory with that person that is held in your heart and mind. ![Brown wicker pumpkin in front of orange and green leaves on set table. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Fallresizedblog-266x300.jpg)Of course, Thanksgiving also comes with its own commercially driven pressures. The pressure of a large meal with all the trimmings placed upon the table with just the right presentation. The pressure to be joyful and dressed in your appropriate fall attire. Even the pressure to attend a celebration when sometimes one just needs a peaceful moment by themselves. Consider how the meal preparation demands may have affected only one or a few people at the table and what you might be able to do after to let them know you are thankful for their gift to the group. Recognize the sadness that someone may be carrying with them and possibly acknowledge it with a hand squeeze, hug, or special memorial. The family and friends who fulfill what makes you happy are the ones who can best share this day. Thank those you love through how you care for them at this moment. Release those stresses that you can no longer do anything about. Enjoy the day, and recognize that Thanksgiving is such a brief moment to share with those you love. Try to carry that same spirit to many other times throughout the year, because sharing that love and care shouldn’t only be our focus for that one special day a year. But old houses and curious critters sometimes find a way to be with each other. Opossums are not known for their need to get permission as to where they sleep, especially not from us mere humans. Opossums are good climbers and can pretty much get themselves into small spaces that we can’t readily access. Older homes were not always built as tightly as today’s structures. Homes were solid, but often grew to be what they became by the connecting of the original buildings meant for separate purposes. A good example of this would be taking the old kitchen house which once was separated for fire safety and summer heat abatement and connecting to the original living area. Connecting buildings can result in some unplanned spaces and tunnels that soon are forgotten. ![View of interior wall with wood posts. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Wallresized-225x300.jpg)Interior wall exposed during renovation. During its life the Banks house had a visitor or two using access points not intended for nature’s critters. One of the houses’ temporary borders was a sly opossum. By the time the second Margaret Banks came along in the 1990’s the hundred year old house was in serious need of work. Margaret’s parents decided to have repairs done on the flat roofs of the house. As a three year old Margaret was content playing with her dollhouse, repairs went on all around her. The home’s unknown tenant was not prepared to have its snugly space interrupted by construction and soon made a break for it. The result was young Margaret was tugging at her mom’s dress exclaiming “Mommy, I made a mess!” As busy and reassuring moms will do, her mom let Margaret know it would be fine and they would clean it up. Still concerned Margaret let her mom know it was a BIG mess. Now mom was curious and with Margaret in tow entered the room. She was surprised to see the dollhouse in ruins and a hissing opossum expressing its displeasure. “I don’t think you did that honey.” ![Black and white drawing of Opossum. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Opposumresized-225x300.jpg)Audubon print of opossum. The opossum was quickly evicted and sent packing for a more natural habitat. Oh, and the poor dollhouse, well it was restored by a Banks cousin, Ed Crow Allen, who fortunately lived nearby on Penny street. The dollhouse much like the Banks house still stands, much beloved and still played with by children. Stories are an important part of a home’s history and the older the home the more animal stories you will find. Today you may even spot a well placed Audubon print of an Opossum to help keep those stories alive today and in the future. During the extensive restoration of the Banks house some additional hiding holes were discovered, insulated, and sealed up – just in case you were wondering if that opossum was planning on coming back to visit. The Old Depot was moved several times in its life until it found a permanent home off of Main St. Now the depot holds a collection of historical artifacts from in and around Garner to help tell the story of days past. You can walk through the depot building and just feel the history from the days when railroads were an important part of transportation. Volunteer guides are available to help answer questions not just about the museum but about downtown Garner from the past up to today. When people ask where the museum is located the big red caboose out front is always mentioned as a landmark. ![Torn and taped caboose bench](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Cabooseinside2resized-225x300.jpg)The caboose is something people notice with its shiny red color and big white lettering of SOUTHERN X771. Everyone is excited to see the caboose and want to be able to walk through it to learn about how the caboose helped with transportation. The need to be able to step inside the caboose is the reason the Garner Museum at the Depot has started fundraising for its restoration. The museum staff want people to be able to safely enter the caboose and feel some of what it was like to bring up the rear of the train. The interior has had a full life, and with some support and hard work, the story of that life can be told. ![Interior view of old caboose](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Cabooseinside3resized-225x300.jpg)To start the fundraising campaign out strong, Banks Bed and Breakfast is hosting the museum’s first fundraiser. It’s called the Big Red Caboose Tea! Now the planning team has decided to make this tea a twist on the traditional sit down formal tea. The Big Red Caboose Tea will of course have tea, both hot and cold, but also some lemonade for those who want other options. This tea will have a large selection of treats such as cookies, brownies, sandwiches, and more. The Big Red Caboose Tea will also have some fun activities in and around the event. There will be raffle baskets, pop-up prizes and other surprises. The Big Red Caboose Tea is a fundraiser like no other, but everyone is sure to have fun while enjoying tea with friends and family! Join us on June 23rd at 2:00 by going to the museum website, [www.garner-area-historical-society.org](http://www.garner-area-historical-society.org) under events and the Big Red Caboose Tea to purchase your tickets. If you cannot attend the event please, go on the website under the donation tab and indicate your donation to support the caboose. Even small amounts add up to make a big difference. We at Banks Bed and Breakfast [www.banksbnb.com](http://www.banksbnb.com) are excited to be supporting this wonderful project for the Garner Museum at the Depot and the Big Red Caboose. The Banks house has the advantage of having our own almost two acres of woods right in downtown Garner. Those acres are also connected to a larger patch of forest and natural habitats owned by the Town of Garner. The birds seek the backyard and surrounding area out as a refuge for nesting, resting, and feeding on their migration journeys in spring and fall. More than two thirds of the birds that nest in the Piedmont leave our area for the winter, and usually return to the same yards, woods, and gardens they visited last year Another birding opportunity for those who stay with us is the chance to go birding with one of the best. Now I do not say it lightly but Curtis Smalling, my partner in all things, (including innkeeping) is one of the best birders in the state. He has been birding since he was a youngster roaming the mountains in Boone, North Carolina. Presently, Curtis is the Director of Conservation for Audubon North Caroling. His birding treks have brought him all across the state, country, and even a few international jaunts. ![Chestnut-sided Warbler in a green tree. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Chestnut-sided-Warbler3--300x240.jpg)When you bird with Curtis you don’t just get quality time working through sightings and and identification. When you are out in the field with him you also get a rich amount of bird and natural history information. What you will find is that the quality of what you take home from a birding experience with Curtis is very different than just going out to watch birds. Whether you are a novice or a veteran birdwatcher your time interacting with him through birds is one of the more engaging experiences you may ever have with nature. I encourage you to plan an early morning bird walk with Curtis during your stay with us. Spring, summer, fall or even winter can gift you with a natural experience in our backyard woods or downtown Garner’s local trails, and you might be surprised by the diversity you see. Oh, I’ve seen pictures of them so I know what they look like. But, images do not tell me about what Thomas (Tom) Banks and Margaret Kelly Banks felt for each other. Images only help you speculate what they may have initially seen in each other. So, I look to others to share what they know and then write creatively to tell a story, well, a love story. Because it is really the stories that others tell you that can help you understand how a romance can turn into a life together. It’s their lives together that becomes part of family history. In history you lose some of the true facts of what took place but are then allowed to release the creative pieces that make it a good story. This is a short love story of how Thomas Banks and Margaret Kelly built something together and went on to give the Banks House its third generation of the family. ![Black and white portrait of woman named Margaret Kelly Banks wear a suit. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/MargaretBresized4blog-225x300.jpg)Born in 1900, Tom Banks was the fourth of five children for Dr. Braxton and Nannie Banks. Growing up with four other siblings no doubt made for a busy household. Unfortunately, Thomas at the age of three was to lose his father. Even after his mother remarried, she was widowed again within a few years, and the family looked for ways to stay solvent. The house was large and the rooms plentiful. The one over the library was the perfect size to rent. The room and need led to the decision to rent to two young ladies who were working in shops downtown. This worked out for Tom’s older brother Herbert who met his future wife Ossie this way. Although Tom’s brother found his future wife through this plan, Tom remained focused on law. Tom toiled away in the practice of being a lawyer and as Private Secretary to Governor Broughton. Tom soon needed some secretarial support to keep things running smoothly in the office. Following the recommendation of a friend he found the help he needed in a young lady by the name of Margaret Kelly. Margaret grew interested in Tom but he was too focused on his law practice and plans to enlist in the military. Thus, his lovely secretary soon left him and headed to work in New York. Some time passed and eventually Margaret returned back to North Carolina. Things become lost in memory but somewhere along the way Tom made the decision to pursue both service to his country as a lawyer and Margaret as a wife. ![Rock fireplace with clock on the mantle. Leather chair in foreground and bookcase in background.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Fireplaceresized-225x300.jpg)During their romance it was said that Tom and Margaret started collecting rocks together. They collected stones like quartz and granite but not small pieces. They were not interested in tiny samples that fit in a jar or got glued on cardboard for identification purposes. Tom and Margaret were interested in rocks the size of loaves of bread as they had big plans, not little plans. They traveled in Tom’s 39 Ford Coupe around Wake County and brought back a plethora of stones. The rock pile – and their love – grew. The stones, brought to the Banks house, would become the new facade of the old brick fireplace. While Mr. Smith, a local mason, worked on laying the stones, Tom and Margaret laid out their future plans as a couple. No doubt excitedly discussing their dreams as they planned a future together. That fireplace facade still stands covered in the rocks that were each carefully collected by the young couple. Therefore, generations of family, friends, and visitors continue to enjoy time around Tom and Margaret’s dream of building something together. Ugh, another post about why I should eat breakfast. I promise I’m not going to tell you that you must eat breakfast. Although I do eat breakfast every morning, and do believe it’s a good way to get going. (But that’s beside the point.) I’m also not here to lecture you about healthy choices. Think about breakfast as more of the experience of making it the most important meal of the day. ![Egg omelet with bacon and hashbrowns.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/breakfastedit3-300x298.jpg)I believe breakfast being the most important meal actually has more to do with whom and where you are having this meal. Our lives at home and work are often so rushed. It can feel like we jump out of bed, dash around to get ready, grab our caffeine, and blast out the door. Love you! But, isn’t it nice once and awhile to sit down across from someone you care about and ease into the day? Isn’t it nice to take time for yourself and experience the day at a different speed. At a Bed and Breakfast that first meal is one of the most important things we do for you. A fulfilling breakfast experience is one of our hospitality goals . Breakfast is so important to us it’s in our name. Breakfast is part of how we wrap you up with love before you start the adventures of your day. ![Red strawberries, green kiwis, and yellow pineapple cut up in a bow.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/fruitresized500x-225x300.jpg)So, I encourage you to feel the sense of peace that comes from someone else being happy to make you a unique breakfast, serve it to you, and then clean it all up. Take the time you need to plan your day. Savor the flavors. Try new tastes. Observe your surroundings. Maybe even meet new people. Think about what makes today special. If you are sharing breakfast with someone, think about the paths you have taken together to get to this special meal. Look at the person across from you and feel the love that comes from having a friend, old or new. So, yes, I think breakfast is the most important meal of the day and you are the most important person experiencing it. At Banks Bed and Breakfast, look forward to serving you. Originally this Queen Anne was just a one story house built by the pharmacist, Dr. George Montague. Soon after Dr. Braxton Bank’s purchased the home, he added on the second floor and moved in with his family. To this day one of the original exterior windows, which ended up under the staircase, can be seen inside the house. Over the years several additions including the original detached kitchen were incorporated into the floor plan as the building of the family home continued. Like many homes, porches were closed in to accommodate the creation of additional rooms as spaces ebbed and flowed together in different ways according to the ever changing needs of the family. You can walk through the rooms and see a variety of different types of wood flooring from original boards to new oak. Ceiling heights vary according to when and how additions were added. Some interior doors were once exterior doors. Wall and trim finishes vary according to what were the available resources. ![](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Library-resized-500-300x225.jpg)Dr. Banks used the home for his medical practice and the family residence. What is now the dining room was once the patient waiting room. Later his son Tom Banks used the library for his law practice. Other additions were added along the way to provide space for the needs of a large family. ![Dining room with wood tables and white flower arrangements. Fireplace with mirror and Christmas decorated mantle. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Dining-room-blog-resized-500-245x300.jpg)Being a well loved home for so many generations makes for some fun family stories. The third Margaret Banks (who was the last child to grow up in the house) shared this tale about her great-grandmother, Miss Nannie Banks. Miss Nannie (who survived her husband, Dr. Banks by many years) **Did Not** approve when property taxes were first instituted. She did not approve so much that she refused to pay the taxes. She proceeded to begin arguing with town officials about the absurdity of taxing personal property. Eventually the police became involved but she wasn’t interested in paying a dime for land that she already owned. After much discussion and no resolution the Garner police were seriously considering whether they were going to have to arrest Miss Nannie to make a point about the taxes due. Finally, someone had the idea to call her son Tom, who was then enrolled at Harvard University seeking his law degree. So, to settle things Tom took the train down from Massachusetts and intervened in the situation. Family lore says he arrived just in time, paid the taxes and saved his mother from the clink! In saving his mother he also saved the Banks family home for the next generations. The Banks house has endured its fair share of additions, changes, and even a near devastating fire. As any house being cared for by family for over 100 years might be there are some well loved and worn spaces. Today when you walk through the home, its restoration work has helped support its tired bones, protect and repair some damages and freshened up the walls. You can see dents on doors, repairs on floors, and rooms still paneled in wood siding from their past life as an exterior wall. Through all of the home’s imperfections you begin to understand that a house is meant to be a home. It’s beauty is not only in it’s character but in the richness of this grand home that proudly looks out at the historic town of Garner, NC. The Banks house is a perfect example of a home where four generations of a family came together and experienced their own additions, loss, growth and love in the building of their lives. The Banks house continues today as an example of how homes and families link with their communities to represent the past and move forward for the present. When you’re in the middle of restoration you begin to build a very personal relationship with your house. That critical eye that sees all that is wrong, crooked, dented, or crumbling away. Even a simple job that you start with thinking “I can just repaint this” brings up the past dents and drips as you move forward. ![Old Fireplace with brick ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Fireplace-old-resized-image-225x300.jpg)![Brick fireplace with metal electric fireplace insert.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/diningfireplaceresizedblog-225x300.jpg) One day I was at a point where I just wanted one room to be at least close to complete. I craved just one room where I could at least sit and look around in the peace of some accomplishment. I needed one room where I could realize, this is possible, and I’m going to get it all done…. some day. ![Room with ladder and step stool. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Entryresizedoldblogimage-300x225.jpg)![Blue chair and brown bookcase in room.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Entry-new-resized-image-blog-225x300.jpg) I was literally sitting on the floor, lost in thought, when I came across another dent. My first thought was, “are you serious, how did a dent get here?” Instead of thinking about how I was going to repair or cover this up I had a total mind flip. If you’ve never had a mind flip, it’s where you are going along thinking your same thoughts and then, eureka your view changes. ![White door open to empty room.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Eve-door-resized-image-blog-225x300.jpg)![Blue door open to room with edge of bed showing.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Eve-door-resized-image-blog.jpg-2-225x300.jpg) It was at that point that I stopped looking at every dent as damaged and realized, every dent has a story. I would look at a chip knocked off of a door and think, “I wonder if this is when…” You see, the Bank’s house was a home for generations of family. People lived here, worked here, laughed here, and cried here. For over one hundred years they were experiencing what all families do in a home, they were living. When I think about the tales I’ve been told of climbing on the roof or over the railing I begin to see children being children. The rectangle cut out of the bottom of a door (although repaired) had at one point a purpose. So many dents and so many stories. Now when I look at this old house I appreciate the dents, cracks, and wonkiness that makes this home special. I just try to let my mind move to the story of home and family and life. *(This blog was written during the middle of renovations. Actually, the excitement started months ago when many of us small business owners were asked, “Would you be interested in talking to a writer from Our State Magazine?” My response – and I am sure from others – was “Absolutely!” Now our excitement for Garner has become a reality and the feature is real and in print. (see November 2023 issue out now) I’ve been reading Our State Magazine for years now. It’s one of those magazines that I actually read front to back. Our State Magazine ([ourstate.com](https://www.ourstate.com/) ) is truly about the people, places, and events that give us an identity unique to North Carolina. They know how to celebrate this state. ![Man looking through camera at bookcase.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Charlesblogresized-236x300.jpg)Charles Harris, photographer. Soon I received a call from Chloe Klingstedt, assistant editor for Our State Magazine. She was ready to start gathering information and Curtis and I got ready for her scheduled June visit. Well, as ready as you can be when you are being interviewed by a top magazine. It was fun to share Banks Bed and Breakfast with the hope that someone else would love it as much as we do. July seemed like such a long month wondering if our place was going to make it in the article. In reality the writers were working hard to put all the town has to offer into one cohesive story. In August we received an email from photographer, Charles Harris, relating that he had been asked to photograph for the issue about Garner. Being a bed and breakfast, we were able to host him during his stay and get to know a little about his very busy life as a photographer. You should check his Instagram at charles\_harris\_photo or go to his website [charlesharris.com](https://charlesharris.com/). Oh, the places he’s been! In Garner, Charles went in and out of the house for two days trying to catch the best shots all over town with the goal of representing the town and people who live and work here. Finally, the day came for the fact checking conversation with Lara Ivanitch prior to the article’s release. Lara picked out parts of the article to ask specific questions about without revealing the whole piece. It was like a teaser of what was to come while still giving some artistic license to the writers.![Magazine article photo of Banks Bed and Breakfast.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/OurState-article-225x300.jpg) It’s an honor to be a part of something so exciting. Not just for Banks Bed and Breakfast, but for all of the wonderful places in Garner represented along with us. I mean, it’s Our State Magazine! Naming in that respect is understandable as those are the people who made the house into a home by raising families, welcoming and saying good-bye to loved ones, and making all the renovations that change the original home to become their own. Banks Bed and Breakfast, known locally as the Banks House, is no exception. But, there is another person who should get some credit for getting the foundation buildings of the Banks house started and that is Dr. George B. Montague. Dr. Montague built the original one story structure and we don’t know whether he did that with his own hands or with help. I’ve always been curious about this pharmacist and what his life must have been like as he filled prescriptions and mixed formulas ![Engraved name on headstone.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Montague-engrave-stone-resized-225x300.jpg)needed to help people feel better. Dr. Montague was was born September 8, 1854 which means he grew up during the Civil War. He spent 69 years on this earth making his own impact as a pharmacist. Being that Dr. Banks was a doctor and Dr. Montague was a pharmacist I would say they knew each other long before the sale of the house and land. Dr. Montague didn’t go far to set up his own homestead as he eventually built a house and business just across the street on Main Street. His home and business building stood on the corner of Main and Pearl Streets. Today, the history museum caboose sits right across the street from his original home site. Unfortunately his business building and home are now only a part of Garner’s history. In fact, this site will soon be the location of more modern homes for some of today’s families. ![Obelisk tombstone in graveyard.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Montague-tombstone-resized-225x300.jpg)Close to three years after we came into ownership of the Banks house I headed east on Garner Road to partake in some much needed stress relief walking. I’m prone to walking when I need time to think. Past the Senior Center, past the playground and picnic shelter, past the dog park, where soon I found myself in front of the Hayes Chapel Christian Church. That’s when I noticed the graveyard. People who know me, know I have a real pull to graveyards. Graveyards are the places where history settles with so many told and untold stories. So of course I was drawn to stroll through and see if there were any names I’d heard of. Perusing the setting my eyes soon focused on a burial site with one of the tallest structures in the form of an obelisk tombstone. The first thing I noticed was an engraving of a mortar and pestle. When I saw that, I had to read the name. Sure enough, Geo. B Montague, the man who was responsible for the original structure of the Banks house. All this time he has been just down the street. Now, it’s off to the Garner History Museum to find out more! Sure, there are motels out there and on occasion I find myself in one of them. Motels are especially convenient when you just need a place to sleep for the night. But, sometimes you want an experience that wraps you in the heart of the community and that is when a bed and breakfast shines. ![Plates with eggs, bacon, potatoes and red strawberries.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Breakfast-resized-278x300.jpg)A bed and breakfast allows you to become part of what is happening within the home, the gardens, and the community. Guests always have the option of relaxing in their unique private room or joining with others in communal spaces. Like many bed and breakfasts, the Banks Bed and Breakfast provides outdoor areas, porch spaces, a library, dining room, and our entry garden room. Refreshments are often available for your pleasure and vary with the season. Most importantly, breakfast is always an experience in itself with a blend of sweet and savory delights that promote a rich experience for your taste buds. Garner has a variety of events that make visiting this small town interesting. Our town bed and breakfast locates you within walking distance of a coffee shop, a distillery, wine, a plant shop and a bakery. A slightly longer stroll can take you to the History Museum [garner\_area\_historical\_society.org](https://www.garner-area-historical-society.org/) where you can learn about the town and how it came to be. Leave our house and walk to the right on Garner Road a half mile and you will find the Garner Performing Arts Center (GPAC) [garnerperformingartscenter.com](http://www.garnerperformingartscenter.com/) . GPAC, located in the renovated former Garner High School, has great performances and a small art gallery where you can find original artwork for sale. Be sure to check the schedule before you arrive to secure any tickets needed ahead of time, or ask us when you make your reservation. Head to the left on Garner Road and you will quickly find a Garner Recreational Park for picnics, play, and relaxation. Follow the driveway by the picnic shelter to the bottom of the hill and you will find a nature trail with over two miles of trail that leads you through the woods on winding pathways. If shopping is your pleasure the White Oak Shopping Center is two miles away and provides a multitude of options and several restaurants. Garner’s great location is also very convenient with about a ten minute drive to downtown ![Rocking chairs on porch of white house.](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Porchimage-resized-225x300.jpg)Raleigh . Coastal Credit Union Music Park and Red Hat Amphitheater are each about 5 miles away for major concert events. You can easily access all Raleigh has to offer while also supporting our local community. Garner provides the best of both worlds with small town charm, excellent amenities, and easy access to Raleigh. So, take a break from the motel life and come experience a more casual stay at Banks Bed and Breakfast, Looking forward to seeing you! But, it is also a process that happens to non-living things. Homes that are loved, and used, and exposed to the elements eventually will show their age. The elements are what homes constantly battle. Buildings take the rain running into crevices, hail beats dents into surfaces, the sun bleaches the color away. Larger homes and buildings are especially vulnerable to ![Fireplace in blue room with broken lining](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/resizedblogfireplace-225x300.jpg)wear as their upkeep is so much more massive an undertaking. Just the continuous maintenance and costs associated with a big house can begin to consume the family who call it home. Businesses come and go leaving old structures in their wake. Loved structures can soon become a burden and desperate for needed repairs. It is always heartbreaking for me to see a once loved building break down with age. Just thinking about the long gone people who once looked at their building with pride makes me want to save them all. You can’t save them all but you can help save some of them with the idea of preservation through reservation. When the Banks house first came into my sight it was love at first sight. I dreamt of all the things I could do to save its structure and history. The reality was that like for most people I could not take on such a large responsibility without a very good plan. Walking through the house I realized it wanted to be open for others to share in its history and beauty. That’s when I thought of preservation through reservation. Now the idea of taking on an aging structure and repurposing it is not something new. Preservation through reservation has actually been happening with historic hotels, homes, barns, and taverns for many years. When you think about where we came from, and where we are ![Dark room with walls gone and floor missing](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/bloginside-300x225.jpg)going, the importance of saving historic structures becomes part of our future selves. People need to think about the short time they are here and what they are leaving for the future. Preservation needs to move forward in a manner that modernizes without losing the integrity of the structure. Preservation also needs to make sure a building becomes open to all people without regard to preconceived prejudices. An honest history told becomes a tool for communicating growth through the wrongs and pains of the past. A building that welcomes everyone is a building worth preserving. ![Side of white house with roof missing](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/oldporchblog-225x300.jpg)Preservation through reservation helps keep doors open. You can’t save them all but you can help save historic structures through seeking historical buildings as places you frequent. When you make a reservation for a restaurant that was once an old warehouse you are a part of preservation. When you reserve part of your shopping time to spend money in historic towns that is part of preservation. Reserving a room for the night in an historic home is preservation. Keeping the doors open for everyone to share in our history is preservation. Even if the train doesn’t stop in town any longer when it rolls through, it gives you a feeling of nostalgia. You can just imagine the days when it would stop to pick you up for a trip to Washington, D.C. or New York for that big city adventure. A train almost always causes me to pause and look out the window of this big house and daydream about where the Amtrak riders are headed. Sometimes I try to imagine what might be in that box car. One of my favorite train times is when I’m strolling down Main Street. The power of the engine and the blowing of the horn requires you to stop your conversation and notice the trains passing. I bet some people look out the train window and wonder what this little town of Garner is like. I hope some of them even come back to explore the town at a later date. If they do, they will discover some wonderful options to delight their senses. A stroll through Main Street offers a chance to enjoy coffee and sandwiches at **Full Bloom**, fresh pastries from **Nana’s Lil Sweets**, local mixed drinks at **Aristotle Distillery** or your choice of wine from **Zin Yoga Studio and Wine Lounge**. Plants are plentiful at **Pedal to Petal** where you can also get your bike repaired. You can get married right off Main at **The Distillery**, after you’ve gotten your hair done at **Locs, Naturals, and More** or down at **Monique’s**. Historic Garner has several street festivals and often the **Rollin’ Stove** food truck is parked on Main Street even when there’s not a festival. And, as always the [Garner History Museum at the Depot](https://www.garner-area-historical-society.org) is just down the street from all of the local shops and businesses. Slowing down a bit to enjoy what a small town has to offer gives you a chance to ponder history, support the local economy, and think about what the future might bring. So whether it’s the zooming Amtrak or a lumbering freight train loaded with supplies, trains are just one of the wonderful things about strolling down Main Street in Garner. In 1883, the town was incorporated as Garner’s Station but actually lost their incorporation in 1901. Four years later, in 1905, the town was reincorporated as the Town of Garner, which it remains called today. The town of Garner, NC has a rich history much like many small towns across the world. Of course, the best thing about a small town is the pride that people have when they talk about it. You can always hear it in their voice as they start sentences with things like, “When my grandparents first got here….” or “I remember when….” It’s fun to hear the stories about why people are here and why they stay. There are many people willing to talk about the town and a good place to start is the local history museum. So when you are ready to dig a little deeper it is time for you to visit the [**Garner History Museum at the Depot**](https://www.garner-area-historical-society.org/). I can almost see it from my home office if it weren’t for this big Magnolia tree at the corner. It is just a short walk from the Banks Bed![Mural on brown wooden wall with antique items on display. ](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/Museum-main-300x225.jpg) and Breakfast. You can also easily take a nice walk down Main Street until you reach Pearl Street where they are located. A big red caboose marks your turning spot. Make sure and take a good look at the building itself as it is the original (moved) depot building that once was the place where tickets were purchased, people arrived, and others left for their train ride to adventure. Touring the museum gives you a chance to really understand some of the people and places that made this railroad town what it is today. A good collection of local artifacts gathered from donations by community members allows you to piece together what it took to build and grow a small town. While you’re there go ahead and have lunch at picnic tables available for your use. ![Mannequins with hats and dresses](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/museumclothes-blog-208x300.jpg) Hours are limited but regular because, like many small museums, the budget doesn’t allow for a full time staff person, therefore it relies on volunteers. Seeking history, learning about Garner, or just reminiscing, the **Garner History Museum at the Depot** provides it all. Visit the [website ](https://www.garner-area-historical-society.org/)and/or visit the museum, it will be worth your time and leisure. **Categories:** B&B News, Historical Sites, Things to Do **Tags:** Attraction, Garner History Museum, Historical --- ### [Honor the History: The Story of Banks Bed and Breakfast](https://banksbnb.com/blog/2023/04/honor-the-history-the-story-of-banks-bed-and-breakfast) **Published:** April 28, 2023 **Author:** Client Admin **Content:** ![](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/blog-gallery1-history-210x300.jpg)I am a firm believer that old houses need to be valued. Old houses are structures that held families who lived their lives there. Maybe my past life as an Army Brat, moving from house to house, brings about a sense of nostalgia for all homes. Each home has a narrative from its past but also has the chance to create a new story for its future. Homes give us a chance to reflect on the rights and wrongs we have done as humans within a space. When some people look at historic homes they see simpler times and family dinners. Others might see a historic home as a grand statement of some cultural legacy to be celebrated, while others may see what they could not have due to prejudices within our society. Still others may look at historic homes as a past that is no longer and must be cleared from our view to make way for a new vision. Whatever your opinion might be, it is certainly valid. My passion is obviously restoration. Not restoration to portray a past that needs to be re-lived, but restoration to repair. The definition of repair is “to set right” or “put right.” The repair of an old home can set right the need to once again open its doors to a new and possibly wider audience. The repairs that need to happen can not only keep the building preserved but to make the building a welcoming place for everyone. A repair that keeps the house healthy and liveable for all. Although all homes have their own history, they can be repaired to have a new narrative. A narrative of inclusiveness instead of exclusivity. The Bank’s house has a history of opening its doors. It started as a medical practice for the community while the family lived upstairs. Just the research on who lived where and when inside the house shows doors that were open to many. This house welcomed extended family members and borders. The library showed evidence of “well read” residents who worked to understand how to make the world a better place. The house reflected its original family for over a hundred years and is now restored to welcome all. The history of this home is being honored by this new story and that’s exactly what the research into this home’s history tells us the original family likely would have welcomed. ![](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/blog-gallery2-history-1024x555.jpg) We would love to have you for a stay at the Banks Bed and Breakfast and experience the historical beauty of this special home for yourself. While I was growing up as an Army Brat, Curtis was getting settled in the mountains of Boone, North Carolina. While I spent my young life living on the move in and out of military and civilian housing, Curtis was traipsing around the mountains finding his lifelong interest in birds and the natural world. During high school, my family finally settled in Wilmington, North Carolina where I was able to fall in love with the coast, coastal nature, and an amazing architectural history. ![](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/blog-gallery3-route-to-innkeeping-263x300.jpg)Although the coast had a lot to offer, I’ve always been one willing to see what else is out there. The end of my sophomore year of high school I was able to work for the Youth Conservation (YCC). The next summer I was asked to come back and that is where the coastal girl met her mountain boy. Curtis and I became inseparable friends while clearing trails and building fences on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Time spent in YCC hiking, camping, and learning about the environment formed the basis for our relationship that has continued to be an important part of our lives. The first three decades spent raising our family in Boone was a whirlwind of adventures wrapped into a supportive extended family and community support. We always continued to appreciate nature as we worked, hiked, homesteaded, and raised our children. Environmental awareness, history, preservation, education, and community involvement has continued to weave its way through our married life. I spent a career in the field of public education, as an art teacher, middle school teacher, and school administrator. I loved to travel and have visited twenty different countries. I consider it an honor that several international travel experiences were with teachers and/or students. I believe international travel is an important part of understanding others and how we all connect to each other on this planet. Hiking, gardening, and playing with my grandchildren is how I spend my free time these days. ![](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/blog-gallery2-route-to-innkeeping-250x300.jpg) Curtis works for the National Audubon Society as the Director of Conservation for AudubonNorth Carolina. An ornithologist (bird biologist) by profession now, Curtis also spent the first half of his early career working for the Southern Appalachian Historical Association (Horn in the West and Hickory Ridge Homestead in Boone NC) as museum director then general manager. His interest in homebuilding and historic architecture was fed by his work on log buildings for the historical association, and has served him well with the Banks House restoration. He loves to birdwatch, be with the grandkids, and go on forced hikes with his wife (tee hee). ![](https://banksbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/blog-gallery1-route-to-innkeeping-268x300.jpg)Throughout our lives we have renovated, restored, and designed several buildings and homes. Working hard and respecting the environment have been a foundation of our lives. We both love to be with our children and grandchildren while continuing to attempt to bring something good into our local community. Renovating an old home that was important to the community and then being able to open it up for visitors is an honor. Telling the story of this home, preserving the nature around it, and making a beautiful place in a small town has been important to us. We are excited about this new adventure into innkeeping and excited to be able to share a piece of history with all of those who enter the Banks house as our guests. **Categories:** B&B News **Tags:** about us, banks bed and breakfast, history --- ## Pages ### [Welcome](https://banksbnb.com/) SEO Title: Banks Bed and Breakfast: Lodging in Garner near Raleigh North Carolina SEO Description: Banks Bed and Breakfast provides historic lodging near Raleigh in downtown Garner, North Carolina. Garner, North Carolina’s only bed and breakfast, Banks B & B, provides a casual, luxury stay located minutes from Raleigh. Banks Bed and Breakfast is the only 1897 historic stay located on North Carolina’s first paved highway. Our goal is to be authentic to our history and community, and to provide you with a place of comfort within our walls. Standing proudly in the heart of downtown Garner since the 1890s, the historic Banks House is more than a landmark — it’s a story brought to life. In 1897, Dr. Braxton Banks, Garner’s very first physician purchased the home and transformed it to the Queen Anne style able to serve both his growing family and his medical practice. Over the decades, the home continued to evolve. Detached buildings, including the original kitchen, were thoughtfully connected, and new spaces were added as each generation shaped the house to meet their needs. Dr. Banks added upstairs sleeping quarters and a welcoming downstairs waiting room where townspeople once gathered for care and conversation. The rooms have now been restored and updated to include en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and modern amenities.  The result is a warm, character-filled residence that reflects the rich history and heart of Garner. Discover a relaxing way to stay by enjoying the historic library where the collection includes titles from the 1800’s. The library stands today in much the same way it did through the years as the family collection of books ranges from the 1800’s to the 2000’s. The library includes family bibles, medical books, law books, and a wide range of literature. In the most gentle manner guests are encouraged to peruse the collection for an experience like no other. Also available is a modern readers section holding fiction, non-fiction, naturalist and informational titles. Even if you have to make your stay a work visit, the library provides a great setting for reading, writing and if time allows, even a little chess. Once a larger family farm, the Banks House now sits on almost two acres of land offering a little bit of nature to balance the home’s grand demeanor. If you are looking to relax outside, three porches offer a shady place to relax. So whether you want to rock, glide or perch on the stoop there is a place where you can sit and take in the surroundings. When you want to explore a bit of beauty, the gardens surrounding the home almost always have something in bloom. Depending on the season you could see the blooms of Deciduous Magnolias, Daffodils, Redbuds, Irises, Butterfly Weed, Camellias, Petunias, Azaleas, False Indigo and considerably more.  Ready for a light trail adventure? The Banks Bed and Breakfast’s wooded trail sends you through vintage trees with strategically placed seating for rest or meditation. Just head to the archway at the bottom of our parking area. Continue through the woods to the adjoining baseball field and you will soon find the Hilliard Creek Trailhead which follows a 1.7 mile wooded creek located in the Garner Recreation Park. Today, Banks Bed & Breakfast proudly carries on a legacy as Garner’s premier destination for overnight stays, intimate events, and special celebrations. Whether you are here for the night, attending an event, or gathered for a special family celebration we are here to host. In addition to overnight rooms, our parlor can be rented for a variety of activities. Located on the second floor, the Laura is furnished with a queen bed. Spend time working or reflecting at the desk while seated in a grand lion chair – one of the home’s original pieces. Head to the red velveteen couch to enjoy reading or catching a program on the TV. An easy to use electric fireplace insert allows you to determine if you want flames for ambiance or add heat for chilly days. The en-suite bathroom fills the classic bathtub/shower combination needs. A deep copper sink adds to the fall feel located amongst ample countertop space. An interesting feature seen prior to restoration was a square cutout on the floorboards and the ceiling above. Today you can still see a square of ceiling boards flipped sideways which once allowed a stovepipe to run from the downstairs, through this room and then exit into the ceiling and through the roof above. This room was once occupied by two of the Banks girls, one of whom lived in several different rooms in the house as it evolved with the family until its sale in 2018. If you want a spacious room that is designed to give you sleeping, working and relaxing areas then the Laura is the room for you. --- ### [The Libby Mae](https://banksbnb.com/room/libby-mae) **Published:** November 2, 2018 **Author:** Client Admin **Content:** Step into a blend of mid-century modern with fun touches.
